(AP) — When white smoke poured out of the Sistine Chapel revealing that a new pope had been chosen, John Prevost turned on his television in Illinois and watched in awe as his brother’s name was announced. He said Thursday that he was in “disbelief” and then felt an incredible sense of pride that his brother, Cardinal Robert Prevost, had become the 267th pontiff to lead the Catholic Church, taking the name Leo XIV. That makes the Chicago-born missionary the first U.S. pope. John Prevost described his brother as being very concerned for the poor and those who don’t have a voice. VATICAN CITY (AP) — Robert Prevost has been elected the first pope from the United States in the history of the Catholic Church. The Chicago-born missionary took the name Leo XIV. In his first words as Pope Francis’ successor, he emphasized peace, dialogue and missionary evangelization. Prevost had been a leading candidate despite a long-standing taboo against a U.S. pope. But he’s also a Peruvian citizen and lived for years in Peru, first as a missionary and then as an archbishop. He was elevated to the senior ranks of cardinals in January. The Irish-born Vatican camerlengo’s position will be important in the election of the next pope. Francis made his final public appearance a day earlier on Easter Sunday. Francis’ death now sets off the process of allowing the faithful to pay their final respects. Pope Francis is in critical condition after a long respiratory crisis, requiring oxygen at high flow

ROME (AP) — The Vatican says Pope Francis is in critical condition after he suffered a long asthmatic respiratory crisis that required high flows of oxygen. Francis has been hospitalized for a week with a complex lung infection. The Vatican said on Saturday that Francis also received blood transfusions after tests showed low blood platelets, which are needed for clotting.
