Panthers may be potential playoff contender after 7 straight seasons of missing postseason

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers have emerged as potential playoff contenders after a surprising 16-13 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. The Panthers, led by running back Rico Dowdle and quarterback Bryce Young, controlled the game from the start. This win marked their fourth consecutive victory with Young under center and put the Panthers just one game behind the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions in the NFC wild-card race. Coach Dave Canales praised Dowdle’s performance, emphasizing the team’s aggressive style. The Panthers aim to maintain this momentum as they prepare to face the New Orleans Saints next Sunday.… Continue Reading

Allen improved to 8-0 following the bye week and established an NFL record by becoming the first player to run and throw for a touchdown in 46 games, breaking the mark previously held by former Panthers QB Cam Newton. Allen’s 77 career rushing touchdowns (including playoff games) tied Newton for the most all-time. Cook had touchdown runs of 64 and 21 yards.… Continue Reading

QB Bryce Young sits out practice as Panthers amp up preparation for matchup against Bills

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young did not practice on Wednesday as the team amped up preparation for Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills. Young, who suffered a right ankle sprain in the second half of Carolina’s 13-6 win over the New York Jets on Sunday, walked into practice without a noticeable limp and carrying his helmet. However, he headed straight to the stationary bike while teammates began their stretching routine. As the Panthers went into practice mode, Young remained on the side working with trainers, doing resistance training and light jogging. If Young can’t play Sunday, veteran Andy Dalton would get the start at quarterback.… Continue Reading

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Dowdle, who spent five seasons with the Cowboys, said the upcoming game will be very physical and warned the Cowboys that they better buckle up. The Cowboys, who have the 32nd-ranked defense, insist they’ll be prepared. Dowdle’s performance came as he filled in for the injured Chuba Hubbard. Carolina’s Rico Dowdle predicted he’d have a big game against Miami. Then he rushed for 206 yards

CHARLOTTE,. N.C. (AP) — Rico Dowdle made an impressive debut as a starter for the Carolina Panthers, rushing for 206 yards against the Miami Dolphins. He predicted to teammates last week that he’d run for 180 yards, but exceeded his own expectations. Dowdle’s performance included runs of 53 and 43 yards, nearly breaking the franchise’s single-game rushing record. Despite early turnovers, the Panthers stuck with the run game and rallied for a 27-24 win. Dowdle even suggested a key play that set up a field goal. With Chuba Hubbard’s status uncertain, Dowdle’s role looks set to expand. He faces his former team, the Dallas Cowboys, next Sunday.… Continue Reading

QB Young showed fight Panthers want to see despite failing to complete comeback against Cards

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Dave Canales benched Bryce Young two games into the 2024 season for ineffectiveness following a flurry of turnovers resulting in Carolina losing its first two games by a combined margin of 73-13. More than six quarters into this season it looked as if Canales might be answering similar questions about Young’s future. The Panthers fell behind 27-3 to the Arizona Cardinals and appeared on the verge of getting blown out for the second straight week. Young had two turnovers on the first two drives, one that was returned for a touchdown. And then something clicked. Young got going in the second half against Arizona, rallying the Panthers to 27-22 with three second-half touchdown passes.… Continue Reading
