RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Rookie defensemen Charles Alexis Legault and Joel Nystrom picked up their first NHL points in the Carolina Hurricanes’ 6-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres. It marks the first time in the Hurricanes’ team history that two defensemen posted their first points in the same game. And, it was the fourth time in Carolina history — since the relocation from Hartford — that any two players recorded their first points in a game. RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Nikolaj Ehlers scored 46 seconds into the second period and goalie Frederik Andersen overcame a poor start to stop the final 18 shots he faced as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Minnesota Wild 4-3. Jackson Blake, Andrei Svechnikov and Sean Walker also scored for the Hurricanes, who’ve won three of their last four games. They’ve won back-to-back outings for the first time since Oct. 16 and 18. Blake and Walker also each had an assist and Andersen finished with 20 saves. Matt Boldy, playing in his 300th NHL game, scored two goals and Brock Faber had one for the Wild. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Seth Jarvis scored 1:45 into overtime and the Carolina Hurricanes extended their undefeated start despite giving up a three-goal lead in a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Kings. Jordan Staal had two goals, Jesperi Kotkaniemi also scored, and Brandon Bussi made 25 saves for the Hurricanes. Kevin Fiala tied it up midway through the third period for the Kings, who have lost four straight. Trevor Moore and Andrei Kuzmenko also scored, and Anton Forsberg made 36 saves. ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Seth Jarvis scored his 100th and 101st NHL goals, and the Carolina Hurricanes remained the NHL’s only unbeaten team with a 4-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. Alexander Nikishin scored his first NHL goal and Shayne Gostisbehere matched his career high with three assists for the Hurricanes, who improved to 4-0-0 with their second win to start a six-game trip. Leo Carlsson scored and Lukas Dostal stopped 27 shots for the Ducks in their first home defeat under new coach Joel Quenneville. SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — William Carrier and Eric Robinson scored 4 1/2 minutes apart late in the second period, and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the San Jose Sharks 5-1. Sean Walker Shayne Gostisbehere and Jackson Blake also scored for the Hurricanes, who have won three straight to open the season. Logan Stankoven had two assists and Brandon Bussi stopped 16 shots in his NHL debut. William Eklund scored for San Jose, and Alex Nedeljkovic finished with 38 saves. San Jose had opened the season with two overtime losses. The Hurricanes topped 40 shots on goal for the second straight game, and held the Sharks without a shot in the third period. RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes are preparing for a long road trip with concerns about the status of defenseman Jaccob Slavin. He missed a large portion of the third period and all of overtime in Saturday night’s 4-3 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers. Coach Rod Brind’Amour said the team will know more about his status on Monday. Slavin logged less than 4 1/2 minutes of ice time following the second period Saturday night. RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Seth Jarvis scored with 16.7 seconds left in overtime to lift the Carolina Hurricanes to a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. Jarvis also scored the go-ahead goal in Carolina’s season-opening win over New Jersey. Jarvis, who has three goals this season, is building off his 2024-25 season when he was the team’s leading goal scorer. Logan Stankoven, Taylor Hall and Jordan Staal also scored for the Hurricanes. Times are changing in the Metropolitan Division, even if many of the top teams remain the most legitimate Stanley Cup contenders. Washington coming off finishing a distant first has much of the same team back with Alex Ovechkin going into what could be his final NHL season at age 40. Carolina added one of the top free agents in Nikolaj Ehlers to a core that has been to the Eastern Conference final two of the past three years. Hurricanes forward Jackson Blake signs 8-year, $45 million contract extension

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Hurricanes forward Jackson Blake signed an eight-year, $45 million contract extension Thursday that will begin with the 2026-27 season. The 21-year-old Blake, the son of former NHL forward Jason Blake, had 17 goals and 17 assists in 80 regular-season games last season and added three goals and three assists in 15 playoff games. The 5-foot-11 right wing was drafted by the Hurricanes in the fourth round in 2021. He played two seasons at the University of North Dakota.… Continue Reading

Nikolaj Ehlers chooses the Carolina Hurricanes, taking the NHL’s top free agent off the market

The long wait for Nikolaj Ehlers’ free agent decision is over. Ehlers decided to sign with the Carolina Hurricanes, taking the top player available off the market more than 72 hours since the NHL’s signing period began. Ehlers agreed to terms on a six-year contract worth $51 million. He’ll count $8.5 million against the salary cap through 2031. Carolina had plenty of space to add the speedy, productive Danish winger. The 29-year-old joins a core that has reached the playoffs seven consecutive seasons with two trips to the Eastern Conference final over the past three springs.… Continue Reading
