Michael Jordan’s NASCAR team fights for charter status amid explosive lawsuit

Summary
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Two NASCAR teams, including one owned by Michael Jordan, have argued in federal court for a preliminary injunction to be recognized as chartered organizations. This comes amid their antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR. The teams have responded to NASCAR’s decision not to redistribute charters while the case proceeds. The teams, 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports, claim the charter system is unfair. They initially won charter status for this season, but it was overturned. NASCAR wants the money back from when they were chartered. A ruling on the injunction is expected soon, as tensions rise among other teams.… Continue Reading

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — NASCAR hits midsummer amid legal battles involving team charters, a key part of its business model. A federal court ruling is expected soon, with a trial set for December. Separately, Jimmie Johnson’s Legacy Motor Club is in a dispute with Rick Ware Racing over a charter sale. Johnson hopes to secure the charter, while the legal chaos highlights the skyrocketing value of NASCAR charters.… Continue Reading

The two race teams suing NASCAR over antitrust allegations filed for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction to be recognized as chartered organizations for the remainder of 2025. 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports are locked into a lengthy legal battle over the charter system, which is the equivalent of the franchise model in other sports. The case is winding its way through the court system but now with urgency: the teams are set to lose their charters Wednesday and in the latest filing, they allege NASCAR has indicated it will immediately begin the process of selling the six tags that guarantee entry into every race as well as monetary rewards and other benefits.… Continue Reading

NASCAR files appeal against 23XI and Front Row just 1 hour before Daytona 500 qualifying begins

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — NASCAR has filed a 68-page appeal roughly one hour before the start of Daytona 500 qualifying that argues a federal judge erred in recognizing 23XI Motorsports and Front Row Motorsports as chartered teams for 2025 as the two organizations sue over antitrust claims. 23XI Racing is co-owned by NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan and three-time Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin, while Front Row Motorsports is owned by entrepreneur Bob Jenkins. A judge has already rejected NASCAR’s motion to dismiss the suit, and also denied NASCAR’s request that the two organizations post a bond to cover any monies they are paid as chartered teams that would have to be returned should 23XI and Front Row lose the lawsuit.… Continue Reading
