‘How to Train Your Dragon’ tops the US box office as ‘Elio’ marks a new low for Pixar

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ tops the US box office as ‘Elio’ marks a new low for Pixar

NEW YORK (AP) — “How to Train Your Dragon” is maintaining its top ranking in movie theaters. The Universal Pictures live-action remake maintained its No. 1 spot at the North American box office despite two sizeable new releases this weekend. Studio estimates show neither Pixar’s “Elio” nor the zombies of “28 Years Later” could topple “How to Train Your Dragon’s” $37 million in ticket sales in its second weekend. The film has rapidly amassed $358.2 million worldwide. “Elio” took in just $21 million, the lowest opening ever for Pixar. The zombie sequel “28 Years Later” debuted with $30 million.… Continue Reading

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scores 29 points and Thunder beat Pacers 103-91 for NBA title

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished off his MVP season with 29 points and 12 assists, and the Oklahoma City Thunder pulled away in the second half to beat the Indiana Pacers 103-91 and win the NBA championship. Jalen Williams scored 21 for the Thunder, who were pushed to a Game 7 brink in the NBA Finals — but finished off a season for the ages. Oklahoma City won 84 games between the regular season and the playoffs, tying the 1996-97 Chicago Bulls for third-most in any season. The Pacers lost star Tyrese Haliburton early in Game 7 to a serious lower right leg injury.… Continue Reading

What to know about the conflict between Israel and Iran, and the US intervention

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — The United States has inserted itself into Israel’s war against Iran, bombing three of the Islamic Republic’s nuclear sites overnight. U.S. President Donald Trump asserted Iran’s key nuclear sites were “completely and fully obliterated,” and warned there would be additional strikes if Iran retaliates. The U.S. attacks came after a week of open conflict between Israel and Iran, sparked by Israel’s sudden barrage of attacks against Iran’s nuclear and military structure. Iran insists its nuclear program is only for peaceful purposes. Israel views Iran’s nuclear program as an existential threat and has said its military campaign is necessary to prevent Iran from building an atomic weapon.… Continue Reading

Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. wins NASCAR national series debut as crew chief at Pocono

LONG POND, Pa. (AP) — Dale Earnhardt Jr. won his NASCAR national series debut as a crew chief in Saturday’s Xfinity Series at Pocono Raceway. Pressed into unexpected service, Earnhardt called the shots for 18-year-old prospect Connor Zilisch in the No. 88 Chevrolet and they both landed in victory lane. Earnhardt made a pit stop from his day job as team owner at JR Motorsports with normal crew chief Mardy Lindley suspended one race because of a lug nut infraction earlier this month at Nashville.… Continue Reading

Anderson’s 3-hitter against Coastal Carolina in CWS finals opener puts LSU 1 win away from title

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Kade Anderson pitched a three-hitter in his second straight dominant start, and LSU moved within a win of its second national championship in three years with a 1-0 victory over Coastal Carolina in Game 1 of the College World Series finals. The Chanticleers lost for the first time in 27 games and must win Sunday to force a third and deciding game Monday night. LSU made Steve Milam’s RBI single in the first inning stand up with Anderson getting stronger as the game progressed.… Continue Reading

US steps into war between Israel and Iran, strikes 3 Iranian nuclear sites

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — The U.S. military struck three sites in Iran, inserting itself into Israel’s war aimed at destroying the country’s nuclear program in a risky gambit to weaken a longtime foe amid Tehran’s threat of reprisals that could spark a wider regional conflict. President Donald Trump said Iran’s key nuclear sites were “completely and fully obliterated.” He also warned Tehran against carrying out retaliatory attacks against the U.S., saying Iran has a choice between “peace or tragedy.” Iran’s nuclear agency confirmed that attacks hit its Fordo, Isfahan and Natanz atomic sites, but insisted that its work will not be stopped.… Continue Reading

LSU goes for 2nd national title in 3 years as it opens CWS finals against streaking Coastal Carolina

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — LSU and Coastal Carolina have met only two times previously as they enter the College World Series finals Saturday night. Those games back in 2016 have not been forgotten. Coastal Carolina swept the Tigers on their home field in super regionals on the way to their first national championship. The Chanticleers’ opponent in the CWS finals that year was Arizona. Jay Johnson, now at LSU, was Arizona’s coach. Coastal Carolina is on a 26-game win streak. LSU is going for its second national championship in three years.… Continue Reading

Pilot killed in small plane crash in North Carolina raised a wheel to avoid a turtle, NTSB says

MOCKSVILLE, N.C. (AP) — A National Transportation Safety Board preliminary report says the pilot of a small plane that crashed at a North Carolina airport runway this month raised a wheel after landing to avoid hitting a turtle. Officials say the pilot and a passenger were killed in the June 3 crash near Sugar Valley Airport in Mocksville. A second passenger was seriously injured. A communications operator reported that she advised the pilot about the turtle and that after landing, the pilot lifted a wheel to avoid it. A man cutting grass reported that after the wheel was raised, the wings rocked back and forth and the plane took off again. He then heard the crash.… Continue Reading

North Carolina Green Party retains official status despite failing vote thresholds

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The Green Party will remain an official party in North Carolina, able to field candidates statewide through the 2028 elections. The Republican majority on the State Board of Elections voted Thursday to allow the North Carolina Green Party to be recognized again in the ninth-largest state. The party was at risk of joining four other small parties whose candidates for president or governor also failed to reach vote thresholds last year. But Green Party officials said they more than met another standard in state law because presidential candidate Jill Stein was on the 2024 ballot in at least 35 states.… Continue Reading
