Police: Deadly shooting in North Carolina was ‘highly premeditated’ and location was ‘targeted’

SOUTHPORT, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina man is accused of opening fire from a boat into a crowd at a waterfront bar, killing three and injuring five others. Authorities say the shooting happened Saturday night near a popular area in Southport. The alleged assailant, identified as Nigel Edge, reportedly piloted a small boat close to shore, fired into the crowd, and sped away. Edge is charged with three counts of first-degree murder and other charges. Southport Police Chief Todd Coring says the shooting was ‘highly premeditated’ and that the location was specifically targeted.… Continue Reading

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Marcus Jones had an 87-yard punt return for a touchdown, Drake Maye added two touchdown passes and ran for another, and the New England Patriots rolled to a 42-13 win over the Carolina Panthers. TreVeyon Henderson and Antonio Gibson added touchdown runs and Jones had a 61-yard punt return that set up another TD to help the Patriots avoid their fifth straight 1-3 start. The Patriots were turnover-free while going 4 for 4 in the red zone.… Continue Reading

3 killed and 8 injured in North Carolina waterfront bar shooting

SOUTHPORT, N.C. (AP) — A shooting at a waterfront bar in North Carolina has left three people dead and at least eight others wounded. Authorities say the incident happened late Saturday when someone fired from a boat into a crowd in Southport, a historic port town. The assailant approached the shore, fired and then sped away. About half an hour later, the U.S. Coast Guard detained a person matching the suspect’s description on nearby Oak Island. Investigators from multiple agencies are collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. Officials have not released the names of the victims or the suspect.… Continue Reading

Trump to meet Monday with top four congressional leaders as government shutdown risk looms

congressional leaders at the White House on Monday, one day before the deadline to fund the federal government or face a shutdown. The meeting involving House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune as well as House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer was confirmed Saturday by a White House official and two other people familiar with the planning. The parties have been in a standoff for days as Democrats, namely in the Senate, have refused to offer the necessary votes to pass a funding measure that would keep the government open beyond Tuesday.… Continue Reading

Europe takes a record lead into Ryder Cup’s Sunday singles

Europe takes a record lead into Ryder Cup’s Sunday singles

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) — The New York fans gave Europe a stronger challenge than the American players. Team Europe handled both beautifully and are on the verge of winning the Ryder Cup again. Europe won six of the eight matches Saturday and set a Ryder Cup record with an 11 1/2-4 1/2 lead going into the Sunday singles. Rory McIlroy caught the brunt of the verbal abuse. He answered with an expletive and great golf. McIlroy has won all four of his matches. Scottie Scheffler made the wrong kind of history by becoming the first player to go 0-4 in the team matches.… Continue Reading

Tropical weather in the Atlantic is slamming the Caribbean and may strike Southeast US next

MIAMI (AP) — Crews have been preparing for a weather system forecast to hit South Carolina as a hurricane early next week. South Carolina’s governor urged residents to stay alert. North Carolina’s governor declared a state of emergency for Tropical Depression Nine. Forecasters said it could become Tropical Storm Imelda. Meanwhile, Hurricane Humberto strengthened to a Category 5 storm on Saturday, threatening the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda with dangerous surf and rip currents. The Bahamas and Cuba faced heavy rainfall and flash flooding. Florida officials are also monitoring the system closely.… Continue Reading

Trump snubs Biden with autopen photo on new Presidential Walk of Fame

Trump snubs Biden with autopen photo on new Presidential Walk of Fame

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has added a Presidential Walk of Fame to the White House, featuring portraits of previous commanders-in-chief — except for one. Instead of Joe Biden’s portrait, Trump hung a photo of an autopen signing the Democrat president’s name. This move reflects Trump’s ongoing attempts to delegitimize Biden, whom he has frequently criticized. Trump has never acknowledged his defeat to Biden in the 2020 election, falsely attributing it to voter fraud. The Walk of Fame is part of several design changes Trump has made since resuming office, including adding gold flourishes and new flagpoles.… Continue Reading

Bryson DeChambeau put a charge into the Ryder Cup crowd. Europe has snuffed it out

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Bryson DeChambeau delivered a rousing start to the Ryder Cup. Turns out that’s all it was during an opening session bathed in European blue. Jon Rahm won his fifth straight foursomes match and Europe had a 3-1 lead after the opening session. The notorious Bethpage Black crowd has been mostly silent because the scoreboard has been filled with European blue points. The Europeans won the first three matches with ease. None reached the 16th hole. Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele saved the Americans from another opening session shutout when they won the anchor match just as President Donald Trump was arriving.… Continue Reading

Hurricane Helene hit the reset button on one town’s goal of becoming an outdoor tourism mecca

Hurricane Helene hit the reset button on one town’s goal of becoming an outdoor tourism mecca

OLD FORT, N.C. (AP) — The mountain “gateway” town of Old Fort, North Carolina, was well on its way to achieving a major goal: to become a hot spot for mountain biking and all things outdoors. Then nature, as one business owner put it, hit “the reset button.” A year ago, floodwaters from the remnants of Hurricane Helene inundated the town, washing out miles of multi-purpose trails and closing long stretches of the Blue Ridge Parkway, a tourist lifeline. Chad Schoenauer has reopened his Old Fort Bike Shop, but he’s doing more repairs than sales these days. Tourism spending last year was way off in the mountains, but many are hoping for a successful fall foliage season to hit the reset button again.… Continue Reading

He was a loan mortgage officer. Now Ben Griffin is in the Ryder Cup

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Ben Griffin is a Ryder Cup rookie with a path unlike any other American at Bethpage Black. It was only four summers ago when Griffin was working as a mortgage loan officer. He was a good junior and college player. The developmental tours wore him down so he quit to work a 9-5 job. And through a chain of events he never saw coming, Griffin got back in the game. Four years later, he’s No. 11 in the world and a two-time PGA Tour winner. And this week he tees it up against Europe in the Ryder Cup.… Continue Reading
