ATLANTA (AP) — Jen Pawol has made history as the first female umpire to work a regular-season game in the major leagues. Pawol worked as the first base umpire for Saturday’s first game of a split doubleheader between the Atlanta Braves and Miami Marlins. She made her first call in the third inning. Pawol worked third base in the second game of the doubleheader and will be in the spotlight when she calls pitches behind the plate in Sunday’s final game of the series. Browns’ Shedeur Sanders impressive in NFL preseason debut, tosses 2 TD passes in win over Panthers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders impressed in his NFL preseason debut against the Carolina Panthers. On Friday night, Sanders threw two touchdown passes in the first half to Kaden Davis. His father and former college coach, Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, celebrated on social media. Sanders finished the half with 103 passing yards and no turnovers and with the Browns leading 14-7. Carolina’s mistakes helped his performance, including a muffed punt leading to a touchdown. Sanders showed both promise and areas for improvement against the Panthers’ first-team defense. CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn escaped serious injury after a car accident on Wednesday morning on the way to the team’s stadium. He injured his left thumb and missed a joint practice with the Cleveland Browns. Panthers coach Dave Canales says Horn will be evaluated daily. Horn will not play in Friday night’s preseason game against the Browns, but the team hopes he can play against Houston on August 16. Horn was alone in his car when the accident happened near the stadium. He was evaluated by team medical personnel and later seen joking with teammates on the sideline.… Continue Reading

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Rookie Shedeur Sanders will play for the Cleveland Browns in their preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers on Friday night with the recently-signed Tyler Huntley. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski announced the decision before the team’s joint practice with the Panthers. He hasn’t determined who will start. Veteran Joe Flacco is healthy but will not play. Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel will not play either because of injuries. Sanders was drafted in the fifth round. Despite being fourth on the depth chart, injuries to other Browns QBs have contributed to this opportunity. CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers were surprised to be able to sign running back Rico Dowdle, a move that gave them added depth and experience in the backfield. Coach Dave Canales has expressed excitement about the move, noting Dowdle’s experience and potential as a 1,000-yard rusher. Dowdle, who wasn’t re-signed by the Dallas Cowboys, agreed to a one-year, $2.75 million contract with performance incentives. He sees Carolina as a good fit because of its strong offensive line and proximity to his hometown. GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Cameron Young is finally a PGA Tour winner and there was no stopping him in at the Wyndham Championship. Young took any drama out of the final round when he made five straight birdies led by nine shots. He coasted home from there and shot 68 to win by six. The victory follows seven runner-up finishes on the PGA Tour. He becomes the 1,000th player to win a PGA Tour-recognized event. BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) — The Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds are playing the first MLB regular season game ever in the state of Tennessee after a rain delay before the first pitch. They are wrapping up a three-game series Saturday night at the MLB Speedway Classic on the diamond constructed on the infield at Bristol Motor Speedway. This racetrack is called “The Last Great Colosseum.” Organizers threw a big party mixing NASCAR themes with baseball with star Tim McGraw performing. Cameron Young builds 5-shot lead at Wyndham Championship in search of first win

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Cameron Young is one round away from finally being a PGA Tour winner. He ran off four straight birdies in the Wyndham Championship and stretched his lead to eight shots at one point. Young made a pair of late birdies for a 65. That gives him a five-shot lead over Nico Echavarria. No one else is closer than eight shots. Young is widely considered the best player without a victory on a main tour.
