RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Carolina rookie Brandon Bussi made 15 saves for his first NHL shutout, Nikolaj Ehlers scored at 2:52 of overtime and Hurricanes beat the Calgary Flames 1-0 on Sunday for their second straight victory. Ehlers beat rookie goalie Devin Cooley after Taylor Hall put the puck on net. Ehlers scored his fifth goal of the season and first in seven games. Sean Walker also assisted. Bussi played back-to-back games for the first time in his NHL career. Cooley stopped 16 shots. The Flames lost for just the second time in their last six games. Panthers take advantage of Stafford’s 3 turnovers to end Rams’ 6-game win streak with 31-28 victory

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Bryce Young completed 15 of 20 passes for 206 yards and three touchdowns — two of them coming on fourth down — and the Carolina Panthers forced three turnovers by Matthew Stafford to beat Los Angeles 31-28 on Sunday and snap the Rams’ six-game winning streak. Carolina’s defense intercepted Stafford twice with Mike Jackson returning one for a 48-yard touchdown and ended the 37-year-old’s NFL record of 28 straight TD passes without an interception. Derrick Brown, who tipped a ball resulting in one of Stafford’s first pick, came up with a key strip-sack with 2:25 left in the game to preserve the win. Stafford completed 18 of 28 passes for 243 yards with two touchdown passes to Davante Adams, his 13th and 14th of the season.… Continue Reading

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — N.C. State coach Dave Doeren is returning for a 14th season with the Wolfpack. Athletic director Boo Corrigan confirmed Doeren’s return on Sunday. In a statement sent to The Associated Press, Corrigan pointed to Doeren’s “passion for this program” with a focus on “culture and player development.” In an AP interview, Doeren said he’s “all in” at the school and plans to finish out his career in Raleigh. The 42-19 loss to the Wolfpack marked UNC’s fifth defeat by 16 or more points this year. Afterward, the 73-year-old six-time Super Bowl-winning coach offered only terse responses to questions from reporters. RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Short-yardage quarterback Will Wilson ran for four touchdowns to help N.C. State beat rival North Carolina 42-19. Starting QB C.J. Bailey threw two scoring passes as the Wolfpack beat the Tar Heels for the fifth straight year. This one ended the first college season for 73-year-old NFL icon Bill Belichick with the Tar Heels. Belichick had won six Super Bowls as an NFL head coach but won just four games this year. Bailey threw TD passes to Wesley Grimes and Justin Joly. N.C. ATLANTA (AP) — Bryce Young passed for a career-high and franchise-record 448 yards and Ryan Fitzgerald kicked a 28-yard field goal in overtime to lift the Carolina Panthers to a 30-27 win over the Atlanta Falcons. Young’s 54-yard pass to Tommy Tremble set up the winning kick for Carolina, which completed its sweep of NFC South-rival Atlanta. The Falcons suffered their fifth straight loss, including back-to-back overtime defeats. Young completed 31 of 45 passes with three touchdown. Wake Forest rides Carlos Hernandez’s big plays, defense past North Carolina 28-12

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Wake Forest’s Carlos Hernandez scored two touchdowns, including one by returning a teammate’s fumble, on plays that caught North Carolina off guard and the Demon Deacons didn’t allow a touchdown in a 28-12 victory. Hernandez racked up 100 receiving yards on six catches and Robby Ashford threw for a touchdown and ran for another for Wake Forest (7-3, 4-3 Atlantic Coast Conference). Demond Claiborne ran for 98 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown. North Carolina’s Rece Verhoff kicked four field goals, including a record-setting boot, but he had two other attempts blocked. The Tar Heels (4-6, 2-4) had a two-game winning streak snapped. North Carolina coach Bill Belichick said he isn’t pursuing any jobs as a head coach in the NFL. That comes amid the first changes of the current hiring cycle. In a statement posted on social media Friday night, the 73-year-old who led the NFL’s New England Patriots to six Super Bowl titles said he remains committed to building the Tar Heels program. ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — The PGA Tour is returning to Asheville, North Carolina, for the first time in 86 years. It announced a four-year deal with the Biltmore Estate and Explore Asheville sharing duties as the title sponsor. The Biltmore Championship will be the third week in September 2026 at The Cliff at Walnut Cove. It adds to the growing part of the FedEx Cup Fall. The tour already has announced a new event in Austin, Texas. Asheville has history on the PGA Tour. It held the Land of Sky Open from 1939 through 1942. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — No. 25 North Carolina senior guard Seth Trimble is out indefinitely after suffering a broken left forearm during a workout. The school said a timetable for Trimble’s return will be determined following surgery this week. Trimble entered the season as a team leader on a roster with 11 new players and had a huge immediate impact in the Tar Heels’ 87-74 win over No. 19 Kansas on Friday. The 6-foot-3, fourth-year player rebounded from a quiet first half to score 13 of his 17 points in the second as North Carolina rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit.
