9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

N.C. Museum of Natural Science, 11 W. Jones Street

Each year over 35,000 visitors come to BugFest for the exhibits, crafts, games and activities. You will learn more than you ever thought there was to learn about insects. Local chefs even prepare dishes made with insects. The activities will be going on from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. inside the museum and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. outside the museum.

 

SPARKcon

Thursday, October 18, through Sunday, October 21

SPARKcon is the Triangle’s huge creativity festival. An unbelievable number of events, performances and activities take place all over Raleigh. You’ll find music, dance, poetry, food, bike polo, aerial performances, Zumba, science, a treasure hunt, and so much more. Visit the SPARKcon website to see what’s going on.

 

Pullen Scarecrow Festival

Saturday, October 20

10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Pullen Park, 520 Ashe Avenue, Raleigh

Participate in Pullen Park’s annual homage to the scarecrow. They’ll provide stuffing materials and supports, and you’ll need to bring a scarecrow wardrobe and a head. The scarecrows will stay on display at Pullen Park. It’s free to participate but sign up at Raleigh Parks RecLink with bar code #232094. Space is limited.

 

Cary Action Sports Fall Contest

Saturday, October 20

10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Sk8-Cary, 2040 NW Maynard Road, Cary

Watch the best BMX, skateboard and scooter athletes on the East Coast compete in the Fall Contest. All levels of riders are invited to compete. Watch beginners make their first-ever runs and professional athletes pull amazing tricks.

 

West End Poetry Festival

Friday and Saturday

Two locations in Carrboro and Chapel Hill

On Friday, the festival will be taking place at Flyleaf Books, 752 MLK Jr. Blvd. in Chapel Hill, and on Saturday it will be at Century Center, 100 N. Greensboro Street, Carrboro. There will be readings, workshops, a poetry open mic, a social hour with food from Mediterranean Deli and more.
