How key Republican senators are responding to Trump allies’ primary threats

How key Republican senators are responding to Trump allies’ primary threats

By THOMAS BEAUMONT and MEG KINNARD Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — From activists on the far right to Elon Musk, allies of President Donald Trump have been quick to threaten primary challengers for Republican senators who don’t back his Cabinet picks and legislative priorities.

In the case of Iowa’s Joni Ernst, conservatives threatened to run against her if she didn’t back Trump’s pick for defense secretary, Pete Hegseth — before she announced she would.

Louisiana’s Bill Cassidy, a doctor before entering politics, is being closely watched for how he will question Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s nominee for health secretary

South Carolina’s Lindsey Graham, a Trump confidant, has long been targeted by the far right in his state and was booed at a home-state rally during the 2024 presidential campaign.

The Associated Press talked to people connected to five senators who have been targeted online or by rivals in their states.

Here’s a look at each of their potential races and what they face:

Joni Ernst, Iowa

Ernst prompted criticism from the right after she initially stopped short of endorsing Hegseth, who was confirmed by the Senate on Friday. Ernst voted “yes.”

A retired Iowa National Guard lieutenant colonel and Iraq War veteran, Ernst is also a sexual assault survivor. After Trump announced Hegseth’s nomination, she said she hoped to discuss with him comments that he had made opposing women serving in combat roles, and about an allegation, which he denied and was not charged for, that he sexually assaulted a woman he met at a 2017 conference.

Hegseth, at Ernst’s suggestion, affirmed that that “every man and woman has opportunity to serve their country in uniform and to do so at any level as long as they are meeting the standards that are set forward.” Hegseth also said that if confirmed, he would appoint a senior-level official dedicated to sexual assault prevention and response.

Potential challengers to Ernst: Conservative media figure Steve Deace, who posted on Facebook in December that “I don’t want to be a Senator, but I am willing to primary her for the good of the cause.” Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird wrote in a December opinion piece in Breitbart that some unnamed “D.C. politicians” thought “they can ignore the voices of their constituents and entertain smears” from news media outlets. That prompted speculation that Bird, who endorsed Trump before the 2024 Iowa caucuses, might challenge Ernst, who stayed neutral beforehand. Charlie Kirk of the conservative group Turning Point also called for Ernst to face a primary. An effort to boost Hegseth’s nomination led to Ernst’s office receiving thousands of calls.

Cause for concern: Neither Deace nor Bird has taken any public steps toward running. Some prominent social conservatives are bothered by Ernst’s joining with a dozen Republicans and the Senate’s Democratic majority in 2022 to support repealing the Defense of Marriage Act to recognize the validity of same-sex marriages. But she remains popular with Iowa’s power players.

“Anyone who says with a straight face that they are going to beat Joni Ernst in a primary today is kidding themselves,” said Luke Martz, an Iowa Republican consultant. “It would be a fool’s errand.”

Thom Tillis, North Carolina

Tillis angered some on the right for not immediately supporting Trump’s first pick for attorney general, former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz. Though Gaetz withdrew from consideration, Tillis remains a frustration to some among North Carolina’s right wing, in part for voting to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act.

Potential challengers: Andy Nilsson, a onetime candidate for lieutenant governor, has filed paperwork to challenge Tillis. The retired businessman has called for a return to the Reagan-Bush Republican ethos, hardly an attack from the right. Tillis faced three Republican challengers in 2020, all posing as more conservative than him.

Cause for concern: Tillis has reason to expect a right-wing challenge. That faction helped lift former Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson to the 2024 nomination for governor last year. But North Carolina is expected to be among the most competitive states for Senate Republicans to hold in 2026. Roy Cooper, a Democrat who just finished two terms as governor, has not ruled out running for the seat. National Republicans are aware of the risks of nominating someone too far to the right. Cooper’s Democratic successor, Gov. Josh Stein, beat Robinson by nearly 15 percentage points in a state that Trump won by 3 points.

To that end, Trump’s team and Tillis have been working together behind the scenes, said former Gov. Pat McCrory, a fellow Republican.

“I anticipate there will be threats of challenging him from the right. But I also think he’ll deal with it as he has, with hard work and a record of accomplishment,” McCrory said. “I think the incoming administration sees that.”

“They also see he’s the best chance of keeping North Carolina red,” he added.

Bill Cassidy, Louisiana

Cassidy remains vulnerable in large part due to his vote to convict Trump after his second impeachment over the siege of the U.S. Capitol. “Our Constitution and our country is more important than any one person. I voted to convict President Trump because he is guilty,” Cassidy said in a statement after the February 2021 vote.

Cassidy, in his second term, has not yet announced whether he will seek a third. A gastroenterologist before he entered politics, Cassidy will be closely watched for how he votes on Kennedy, a longtime vaccine skeptic who has questioned medical consensus on several issues.

Potential challengers: Cassidy has already drawn a Republican challenger, state Treasurer John Fleming. Fleming, a former U.S. House member from northern Louisiana, has said Cassidy’s impeachment vote “failed” Louisiana. Former U.S. Rep. Garrett Graves of Baton Rouge is also a potential challenger, as is Blake Miguez, a state senator from New Iberia.

Louisiana last year did away with its 50-year tradition of “jungle primaries,” where candidates from all parties ran in the same contest in November. Cassidy would now run in a closed Republican primary that might be more difficult if he faces one strong Trump-aligned challenger.

Cause for concern: Cassidy’s vote to convict Trump remains a sticking point for Republicans in a state the president won with 60% last year. But Cassidy is viewed as having strong constituent relations and visibility in the state, political observers say.

“Aside from that vote, I think he’s considered a good senator, and good at constituent work,” said Ellen Carmichael, a Louisiana Republican consultant and president of Washington-based Lafayette Company. “The base is unhappy with the vote he cast. But I wouldn’t count him out.”

John Cornyn, Texas

Cornyn in the past has been criticized within his own party for being too willing to work with Democrats and has drawn boos at GOP conventions in Texas. Commentator Tucker Carlson and others have urged a primary challenge against him.

Last year, Cornyn told the Dallas Morning News that, “God willing,” he would seek reelection in 2026. According to federal filings, Cornyn had more than $3.5 million on hand in toward the end of 2024.

Potential challengers: Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is one of the state’s most powerful Republicans and also suggested Cornyn should be primaried. Paxton was acquitted in a 2023 impeachment effort and fraud charges against him were dropped last year. Cornyn and Paxton have sniped at each other on X, with Paxton calling Cornyn “anti-Trump” and “anti-gun” and the senator firing back, “Hard to run from prison, Ken.”

Cause for concern: Brendan Steinhauser, a Republican strategist who has worked on Cornyn’s previous campaigns, noted that the senator remains undefeated in elections.

“He’s never taken a race for granted. I would expect him to work extremely hard and crisscross the state of Texas to earn every vote possible in this upcoming election, assuming he has a primary challenger,” Steinhauser said. “I think it’s important for him to show the ways that he has worked with President Trump to enact the conservative America First agenda, and I would expect that would be a big part of his campaign message in a potential upcoming primary.”

Lindsey Graham, South Carolina

Seeking his fifth term, Graham will likely face primary challenges — he always has. County-level Republican parties have censured him a number of times for his willingness to work on bipartisan deals. One such measure derided Graham’s “condescending attitude” to the party’s grassroots organizers.

He has even drawn boos at some events of the party faithful in his home state. That includes a July 2023 Trump rally in Pickens — in the county where Graham grew up — where objections from the crowd drowned out more than five minutes of his remarks. When he took the stage, Trump also elicited boos when he mentioned Graham’s name.

Graham has named a campaign leadership team, which says he has more than $15 million on hand, including nearly $1 million raised in the final quarter of 2024.

Potential challengers: Rep. Ralph Norman represents South Carolina’s 5th Congressional District south of Charlotte, North Carolina, and is a member of the House Freedom Caucus. Another possible opponent could be Adam Morgan, a former South Carolina legislator who lost a primary bid last year against another congressman, Rep. William Timmons.

Cause for concern: While he was highly critical of Trump in 2016 when they competed for the Republican nomination, Graham has backed Trump ever since his first administration, frequently serving as his golf partner and Capitol Hill surrogate. Trump has backed him in turn. When the crowd in Pickens booed Graham’s name, Trump said he was “going to have to work on these people” and added that Graham is “there when you need him.”

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Use a fork to pierce each potato 3–4 times, then place them on a baking sheet. Roast the potatoes for about 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until they are tender when pressed. Allow the potatoes to cool until they can be handled comfortably. Lower the oven temperature to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, add butter, cooked bacon, and sour cream. Carefully cut each potato in half lengthwise with a sharp knife. Scoop out the potato flesh into the bowl, leaving a thin layer of potato inside the skins to provide structure. Arrange the empty potato skins on a baking sheet.
  3. Mash the scooped potato together with the butter, bacon, and sour cream. Stir in 1 cup of shredded cheese, milk, seasoned salt, most of the sliced green onions (reserving some for garnish), and black pepper. Mix until well combined.
  4. Spoon the mashed potato mixture evenly into the potato skins. Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of cheese over the tops. Bake the filled potatoes at 375°F until the tops are golden brown and heated through, about 20 minutes. Garnish with the reserved green onions and a dash of black pepper before serving.

Directions

  1. Preheat Oven:
Arrange a rack in the lower third of the oven and preheat to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare Ingredients:
Dice the onion, slice the carrot, and mince the garlic. Trim excess fat from the beef and cut it into 2-inch cubes. Pat the beef dry with paper towels and season it with 2 teaspoons of kosher salt and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper.
  3. Cook Bacon:
In a Dutch oven or heavy oven-safe pot with a lid, cook the bacon over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the fat renders and the bacon becomes crisp (10–12 minutes). Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside in a bowl.
  4. Brown the Beef:
Working in batches, sear the beef in the rendered bacon fat until browned on all sides (2–3 minutes per side). Transfer the browned beef to the bowl with the bacon. Repeat with the remaining beef.
  5. Cook Vegetables:
Add the onion and carrot to the pot and sauté until the onion softens (about 3 minutes). Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant. Mix in the tomato paste and cook for 1–2 minutes, allowing it to deepen in color. Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables, stirring to coat, and cook for 1 minute.
  6. Deglaze and Combine:
Pour in the red wine, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pot. Stir in the beef broth, thyme sprigs, bay leaves, and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon of kosher salt. Return the browned beef, bacon, and any accumulated juices to the pot. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium-high heat.
  7. Braise in the Oven:
Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and transfer it to the oven. Braise for about 2 hours, or until the beef is fork-tender.
  8. Prepare Onions and Mushrooms:
About 30 minutes before the stew is done, melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the pearl onions, mushrooms, 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Sauté until the vegetables are tender and lightly browned (12–15 minutes).
  9. Combine and Serve:
Remove the pot from the oven and discard the bay leaves and thyme stems. Stir in the cooked onions and mushrooms. Adjust seasoning with more salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired, and serve warm.

North Carolina Facts They Don’t Teach in School

Sure, we all know North Carolina is the ‘Tar Heel State’ and home to the Wright Brothers’ first flight. But did you know it was also home to Blackbear and the largest home in America? Buckle up, because we’re diving into some fascinating facts about North Carolina that you didn’t learn in school!”

North Carolina Has Its Own Lost Colony Mystery

The story of Roanoke is one of America’s greatest mysteries. The word “CROATOAN” carved into a tree is still baffling historians.

The Roanoke Colony was founded in 1585, but after a ship returned in 1590, the colonists had disappeared. John White led the second expedition in 1587 after Sir Walter Raleigh sent White to the Chesapeake Bay to establish the “Cittie of Raleigh.”

White went back to England, intending to return to Chesapeake Bay with supplies in 1588, but his return was delayed until 1590 due to the Anglo-Spanish War. Once he had returned, the words “CROATOAN” were found carved into the palisade (tree trunks or wooden stakes used as a defensive wall).

The fate of the 112 to 121 colonists remains unknown to this day.

The World’s Largest Chest of Drawers is Here

In High Point, the “Furniture Capital of the World,” you’ll find a massive 38-foot-tall chest of drawers complete with dangling socks to honor the region’s hosiery industry.

Known as the Bureau of Information, the 19th-century dresser dates back to 1926. The dresser had a complete makeover and transformation in 1996 by Sid Lenger. After Sid Lenger died in 2003, a real estate developer had the socks repainted neon green and orange. The elegant wood finish was also repainted with a coat of gray. This caused a stir with locals who considered it disrespectful to Sid Lenger’s work.

The chest was eventually sold to High Point University in 2018 and Brian Davis, an artist and designer, jumped at the opportunity to restore Lenger’s original vision. The socks were repainted with purple and yellow on one and pink and blue on the other; a nod at the city’s University and minor league baseball team.

The Venus Flytrap Calls North Carolina Home

This carnivorous plant is native to the wetlands around Wilmington and doesn’t grow naturally anywhere else.

Despite being known worldwide, North and South Carolina are the only natural habitats for wild Venus flytraps. These areas are all within 100 miles of Wilmington and contain the necessary needs for the Venus flytrap such as sunny, nutrient-poor, and wet habitats.

Development around these areas has led to populations of flytraps being extinguished. Wide-spread developments such as golf courses, housing, and commercial areas are responsible for the loss of flytraps.

The First Miniature Golf Course Was Built Here

Fayetteville is where miniature golf began in the early 20th century, paving the way for date nights and family outings everywhere.

In 1954, Don Clayton designed and built the first putt-putt course in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He wanted to create a more organized course that helped with putting skills. Clayton was frustrated with miniature golf courses that featured windmills and waterfalls. He set out to build courses using 3-by-5 cards.

He began with charging 25 cents for 18 holes and after a year, he was selling franchises.

A State Full of Superlatives

You may know the phrase “First in Flight,” but North Carolina is a place of many firsts. From the tallest brick lighthouse (Cape Hatteras) to the oldest state university (UNC-Chapel Hill), North Carolina is full of firsts and record-holders.

North Carolina holds the Guinness World Record for longest surviving double heart bypass patient. Bobby Brown of Gastonia North Carolina has a double heart bypass surgery in his mid 30’s. CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia performed the surgery and as of 2017, Brown was a sprightly 78-year-old.

In Cabarrus County, the nation’s first gold rush started in 1799. A 12-year-old boy, Conrad Reed, was spotted playing with a large nugget on his family farm. The 17-pound nugget was used as a doorstop for the family as the value of gold wasn’t commonly understood in their community. The nugget was purchased for $3.50 (equivalent to $74.53 as of 2023) but the true value would be around $3,600.

The Pirate Blackbeard Called North Carolina Home

Blackbeard, one of history’s most infamous pirates, made his home along North Carolina’s coast. His ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge, was discovered off Beaufort in 1996.

Blackbeard arrived on North Carolina’s coast in June 1718, settling in North Carolina’s first established town, historic Bath. He received the “gracious pardon” from colonial governor Charles Eden immediately upon his arrival.

It is believed that he resided on Plum’s Point. Members of the Bonner family, who resided in the house across the bay, claim that during storms, they could see a ball of fire sail back and forth from Plum Point to Archbell Point.

The Appalachian Dialect Is Like a Time Capsule

The Appalachian Mountains preserve a dialect with words and phrases from Elizabethan English, making it a fascinating subject for linguists.

The dialect came from settlers who settled in the Appalachians due to the abundant resources. By settling in the Appalachians, they cut themselves off from the rest of the country, creating natural isolation.

This allowed the language and dialect to remain alive without the influence of the European language. To this day, phrases are used in Appalachian Dialect that are no longer common in other areas across the country.

Lake Norman Is a Man-Made Marvel

Created by Duke Power in the 1960s, Lake Norman is the largest man-made body of water in North Carolina, spanning over 32,000 acres.

Lake Norman was originally dry land where people lived and worked up until a little over 60 years ago. In the 1890s it was proposed that a dam be built by an engineer working on the Niagra Falls dam. Duke funded what was then the Catawba Power Company to carry out the plans for the dam.

Lake Norman spans four counties and more than 32,000 acres of surface. Underneath the man-man lake, there are many remains of the town that once inhabited the area. There are remains of a 1938 summer camp and the site of the Battle of Cowan’s Ford from 1781.

Underneath the water, old gravesites, plantations, homesites, and highways can be found. In 2013, firefighters found an airplane using sonar.

Located in Asheville, the Vanderbilt family’s Biltmore Estate has over 175,000 square feet of floor space and 250 rooms.

George Washington Vanderbilt, born in 1862, is a part of America’s wealthiest and best-known family. He visited Asheville in 1888 where he began to envision he could build his country home. He began purchasing land for what would become the Biltmore, hiring Richard Morris Hunt to design and build his new home.

Construction began in 1889 and officially opened to the Vanderbilt family in 1895. The Biltmore includes 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms and 65 fireplaces. Three years after the home opened, George Vanderbilt married Edith Stuyvesant Dresser and promptly returned to live at the Biltmore.

George Vanderbilt passed away in 1914 at 51 and was buried on their family estate in Staten Island. In 1930, George Vanderbilts daughter Cornelia and her husband John Cecil opened the Biltmore  House to the public. In 1963, The Biltmore was officially nominated as a National Historic Landmark under “Conservation of Natural Resources.”

This move marks Belichick’s first time in college football coaching, bringing his extensive professional experience to the collegiate level.

“I’ve always wanted to coach in college football. It just never really worked out. Had some good years in the NFL, so that was OK. But this is really kind of a dream come true,” Belichick says.

Brind’Amour was acquired to play for the Carolina Hurricanes in January of 2000, going on to lead the team to victory in the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals. Since retiring as a player in 2010, his jersey number 17 was retired in 2011. That same year, Brind’Amour joined the coaching staff as their assistant and development coach. In 2018, Brind’Amour was hired as the Hurricanes’ head coach, leading the team to the playoffs every season since.

After Blake Harrell was appointed as interim head coach for ECU football, the team experienced a remarkable turnaround. Under the leadership of Harrell, the Pirates transformed from a struggling squad with a 3-4 record into a team that finished the regular season with a perfect 4-0 record. His efforts led to East Carolina securing a bowl game against North Carolina State University.

In late September, Hurricane Helene caused significant devastation in North Carolina. The Emergency Management Department of Rutherford County issued a warning for the “imminent” failure of the Lake Lure Dam due to significant rainfall, leading to immediate evacuations.

The death toll from Hurricane Helene is estimated at around 230 people, with nearly half of the deaths occurring in North Carolina, making it the second-deadliest hurricane to strike the United States in the past fifty years, behind only Hurricane Katrina. A thousand U.S. soldiers were deployed to western North Carolina to aid in humanitarian operations and in finding hundreds of missing residents. The death toll for North Carolina is verified at 103 as of December 11th, according to the NCDHHS.

The state achieved its enrollment goal for Medicaid expansion, enrolling over 600,000 low-income adults about a year ahead of projections. This expansion has notably benefited rural communities, with over a third of new enrollees residing in these areas. Since its rollout, 4.1 million prescriptions related to chronic diseases have been filled, demonstrating the program’s immediate effect on public health.

Telehealth: Improving Access Across the State

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and evolving healthcare needs, North Carolina expanded access to telehealth services in 2024. This policy change allowed more healthcare providers to deliver services remotely, making it easier for patients to access care, especially for routine check-ups and chronic disease management. The expansion also facilitated mental health services and reduced travel for patients in remote areas.

On November 5, 2024, Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein was elected as the Governor of North Carolina, defeating Republican Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson. Stein’s victory marks him as the state’s first Jewish governor. The election was notable for Stein’s significant margin of victory, which analysts suggest contributed to down-ballot successes for Democrats in concurrent elections.

In the 2024 U.S. presidential election, North Carolina remained a key battleground state, known for its status as a swing state due to its diverse electorate and fluctuating political preferences in recent years. However, in the election, the state ultimately leaned in favor of the Republican Party, with Donald Trump securing a victory.

Across the U.S., the topic of hurricanes, wildfires, and extreme weather events has become more apparent. North Carolina, prone to hurricanes, benefited from national policies designed to improve climate resilience and disaster preparedness. The federal government continued to provide funding for disaster relief in states impacted by severe weather, including North Carolina, which dealt with Hurricane Helene in 2024.

As of December 7th, 2024, Governor Roy Cooper announced that President Biden approved North Carolina’s request to increase federal coverage of Public Assistance costs to 90%, up from the typical 75%.

During a campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania, Trump was grazed by a bullet on his right ear. The assailant, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, fired eight rounds from an AR–15–style rifle, tragically killing an audience member and injuring two others. Crooks was fatally shot by Secret Service agents and Trump was discharged from the hospital in stable condition a few hours later.

A second attempt occurred at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. The suspect, Ryan Wesley Routh, was spotted by a Secret Service agent before he could make an attempt. Routh fled the scene and was apprehended 40 minutes later. He now faces multiple federal charges, including attempted assassination.

NEW YORK – JANUARY 01: Photo by Hiroko Masuike/Getty Images

New Year’s Day celebrations can be traced back to 2000 BCE in Mesopotamia, where the new year began with the new moon. In 46 B.C., Julius Ceasar created the Julian calendar, based on the sun, starting January 1st. The Gregorian calendar, most widely used today, was adopted in 1582 by Catholic nations to correct Julian’s calendar length error. The New Year’s Eve tradition of the ball drop in New York City’s Times Square started in 1907, replacing the fire risk of fireworks, and has occurred almost every year since. In modern society, the New Year is a time for reflection on the previous year, a time to celebrate accomplishments, and an opportunity to set goals for the upcoming year.

Valentine’s Day was not celebrated as a day of romance until around the 14th century. A Christian martyr named Valentine (Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni) could be the reason behind the holiday’s name but what led to that is up for debate. There are two major theories, one being that Valentine was executed on February 14th for defying the emperor’s ban on marriage. Another theory is that Valentine befriended and healed a blind girl, restoring her sight. The night before his execution, he left her a note signed “from your Valentine.” The romantic connection of Valentine’s Day is likely tied to Geoffrey Chacer’s “Parlement of Foules” in 1382. The mass production of Valentine’s cards began in the mid-19th century and is still a widely celebrated holiday today.

Easter

The earliest observance of Easter was in the 2nd century to commemorate the resurrection. In early celebrations, Christians celebrated Easter every Sunday but these are now the foundation of modern weekly Mass. The tradition of decorating Easter eggs dates back to around the 13th century when Lent forbid eggs. Easter egg hunts date back to the 16th century, some suggest, after Martin Luther organized egg hunts where men would hide eggs for women and children to find. The Easter bunny first became a tradition in the United States in the 1700s from German immigrants, specifically in Pennsylvania, after they brought the “Osterhase,” to lay eggs.

The Declaration of Independence was announced as the separation of the 13 American colonies from Great Britain on July 4th, 1776. The Declaration was signed by most delegates on August 2nd, making it official. If the British had won the American Revolution, the men whose names were on the paper, risked losing everything. The first Independence Day celebrations in 1777 included fireworks, bonfires, and bells in Philadephia. In New England, towns would compete on who could build the tallest bonfires, lighting them at nightfall. Today, Independence Day is celebrated with parades, family gatherings, fireworks, and, of course, the typical all-American food.

Thanksgiving

In 1621, the Wampanoag people and English colonists took part in a feast that lasted three days. While this feast occurred, there is no confirmation that this marks the first Thanksgiving. This feast included dancing, games, deer, corn, and shellfish. In 1623, after a two-month drought, there was rainfall and the colonists gave thanks to God, making this a religious Thanksgiving (not tied to the 1621 event). The national holiday was established in the mid-19th century and is based on the 1621 harvest feast. Thanksgiving was previously suggested to be celebrated on November 26th by George Washington but after the end of the Civil War in 1863, Abraham Lincoln suggested it be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November.

Hanukkah

Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that means “dedication” in Hebrew. Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem after the Maccabean Revolt in the 2nd century BCE. Hanukkah begins on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar, a lunar calendar, which typically falls in November or December. The Dreidel was adopted after the Jewish people struggled to maintain religious freedom. Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish celebration that is celebrated by lighting the menorah or Hanukkiah, playing games, and giving gifts in modern traditions.

Christmas

In ancient Rome, December 25th was used to celebrate the return of longer days and in the 4th century, the Christian church adopted December 25th as the birthday of Jesus of Nazareth. Traditions emerged over the centuries including Christmas trees, carolin,g, and Santa Claus. Christmas has incorporated a variety of cultural traditions. The first Christmas tree was decorated in 1510. Modern depictions of Santa Claus come from Clement Clarke Moore’s poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” in 1823. Santa Claus’ modern appearance became popular in 1881 after a Coke-a-Cola advertisement featured a man with a red suit and white beard. In Germanic and Nordic countries, Christmas is celebrated on December 24th as children are presented with their presents.
