Furry Friday: Meet Forrest!
If you’re a fan of hound dogs, Forrest might just be your perfect match! This sweet, gentle guy absolutely LOVES his sniff walks-he’s basically a professional scent detective, soaking up all the smells around him. While he can get a little excited and pull on the leash, a little redirection and he’s back on track. When he’s not sniffing his way through life, Forrest is all about cuddles. His soulful eyes and affectionate nature will totally steal your heart.Forrest is food-motivated, so training is a breeze! With a bit of guidance, he’ll have the basics mastered in no time.
In playgroups, Forrest showed he enjoys playtime but likes to do things on his own terms. He’s most comfortable with confident, non-dominant female dogs-but he had a blast with a silly, energetic young male recently too! He’d do best with a tolerant, playful partner who can handle his quirky hound vibes.
If you’re looking for a cuddly, fun-loving dog with a nose for adventure and a heart full of love, Forrest is ready to find his forever home. Come meet him today and let the sniffing and cuddling begin!
Although he is heartworm positive, it is treatable and not contagious. Friends of Wake County Animal Center has provided a $600 sponsorship to help cover the cost of treatment.

If you’re interested in learning more about Forrest, please reach out to our Volunteer Matchmakers at [email protected] with the subject line “Forrest 256750.”
He is up to date on vaccinations, flea/tick, and heartworm prevention, is microchipped, and already neutered. If you have dogs or cats, we recommend slow introductions over time. If you have children in your home, we recommend supervision between animals and children at all times.

Furry Friday: Meet Priscilla!
Meet Priscilla, the rough-and-rowdy, high-energy dog playmate who’s always ready for play time! She’s a fantastic dog to use for testing the male dogs and how they will play with females. Priscilla doesn’t hold back-she’s tough, and she knows how to keep the peace, like when she expertly corrected a naughty male who just wouldn’t stop trying to mount her. Despite her energetic playstyle, Priscilla is also a lover at heart, especially when it comes to pool time. When the water’s involved, she prefers to cling to her trusted human, proving she’s got a soft spot for a little comfort and security.

If you’re interested in learning more about her, please reach out to our volunteer matchmakers at [email protected] with the subject line “Priscilla 256256”.
She is up to date on vaccinations, flea/tick, and heartworm prevention, is microchipped, and will be spayed prior to going home. If you have dogs or cats, we recommend slow introductions over time. If you have children in your home, we recommend supervision between animals and children at all times.

Why the ninebark shrub deserves a spot in your garden
By MIKE RALEY WPTF Weekend Gardener
How many of you have ever heard of the Ninebark shrub or Physocarpus opulifolius for those of you who like to get technical? I hadn’t until recently! Since then I have learned that the Ninebark is also referred to in horticulture circles as Common Ninebark, Atlantic Ninebark, or Eastern Ninebark and is native to the eastern United States including North Carolina. Most frequently seen growing in the mountains and foothills of North Carolina, but seen less often in the central part of the state. It seems to like rocky hillsides and slopes near rivers. You won’t find ninebark growing very much in eastern North Carolina.
It is easy to grow and will adapt to acid or a bit more alkaline soils and can grow in full sun, six or more hours of sun, or part shade-4 to 6 hours of shade. Ninebark has exquisite peeling bark and legend says it has nine layers of bark. It is always good to have plants in the landscape with year-round interest. I just purchased a “Summer Wine” cultivar, one of the Proven Winner line of shrubs. What makes this variety so special? It has deep maroon-colored leaves. Those leaves are a major reason for buying one. Of course, the small flowers that look like pinky-white buttons are another great attribute. Ninebark blooms in the spring and the “Summer Wine” really puts on a show. A drought-tolerant shrub that really appreciates a little extra water for the first year after planting. The folks at NC State tell me the burgundy varieties lose a little color if the leaves are exposed to too much sun during the day.
Ninebark prefers rich, well-drained acidic soil. When planting, be sure to dig the hole twice as wide as the root ball and deep enough for the top of the root ball to peek over the top of the ground surface. You may choose to place some type of aggregate at the bottom of the hole, add some water, and fill in dirt, compost, or organic matter of some kind good organic matter like Daddy Pete’s. Add two to three inches of hardwood mulch or pine straw.
For those of you with sharp pruners and the overwhelming desire to prune, wait until then ninebark has bloomed. It blooms on old wood as do most flowering plants. Anne Clapp used to remind us to clean the places of our pruning shears with alcohol to prevent the spread of disease.
There are several interesting nine-bark cultivars available. I would consult with your favorite local nursery. As I mentioned above I have recently planted a nine-bark “Summer Wine” with its maroon leaves and white flowers and remains colorful throughout the season. The common ninebark has quite typical green leaves. “Diablo” is a variety that has been around for a while and is quite popular with leaves that emerge as a kind of a copper color that turns a shade of burgundy. There is a stylish variety named “Amber Jubilee” with its amber foliage that transitions to red and then purple. “Tiny Wine” is a dwarf variety with bright red-purple foliage. “Dart’s Gold” and “Festivus Gold” both have bright yellow foliage. Ninebark shrubs like a little feeding once a year with a good organic fertilizer low in nitrogen.
Now that we all know a bit more about Ninebark, I hope you will consider adding one to your landscape. Tony Avent has always preached about growing a variety of plants in your landscape and that really makes a lot of sense. You have fewer chances of developing disease problems from monoculture and your yard will have more character and interest.

Furry Friday: Meet Sadie!
Meet Sadie the Lady, a 2-year-old 45 lb pointer mix looking for her forever home. This sweet and spicy diva has a heart of gold! She is a total lovebug and once she bonds with you, she will be your loyal companion for life. If you’re looking for a rescue dog to spoil, Sadie is the lady for you.
Sadie is the perfect mix of playful and couch potato. She needs to play daily but also enjoys lounging on the couch and cuddling with her favorite human. Sadie’s ideal home will include someone who works from home or spends a lot of time there, just because she really loves her people. If left at home she does not prefer a crate but will be on her best behavior waiting on the couch for your return.
Sadie is fully potty trained and can get a little overexcited on a leash walk, but responds well to training from her patient and consistent human. She is super smart and a quick learner! Sadie would do best with a submissive dog where she can be the boss but would also be happy to be the only dog. No cats please. Sudden movements can make her nervous so humans 12 and over would be best.

If you are looking for a loyal, loving, sweet, silly and sassy companion, Sadie is the perfect match for you. Please give this lovable pup the patience and chance for a loving home she deserves. This dog is currently in a foster home and not at the shelter. If you’re interested in learning more about Sadie, please email [email protected] with the subject line of “Sadie 246564”.

Furry Friday: Meet Franklin!
Franklyn is a one year old, medium energy boy! He gets excited when you come to his kennel, but volunteers say he is easy to collar and walk on the leash. He does pull at times, especially when he’s caught a scent and is on sniff patrol!
During doggie playgroups, Franklyn paired up nicely with a high energy female playmate and seemed to enjoy the tango together!
This good boy gets to go on adventures with our volunteers! On his latest outing to the park, it was noted that he rides very well in the car and on the hiking trails, he loves to sniff and explore all things. He would do best with humans who can match his need for outdoor adventures. He is quite the messy pup-cup eater though so be sure to get lots of napkins! Franklyn loves to smile and have a good time, come and meet your new best friend!

Although he is heartworm positive, it is treatable and not contagious. Friends of Wake County Animal Center has provided a $600 sponsorship to help cover the cost of treatment.
If you’re interested in learning more about Franklyn, please reach out to our Volunteer Matchmakers at [email protected] with the subject line “Franklyn 255128.”

Furry Friday: Meet Roger!
Meet Roger, an amazingly sweet 8-year-old Lab Retriever mix who truly deserves a peaceful and loving home to spend his senior years. He’s been through a lot-Roger was found outside the Animal Center, running around with another dog, both injured. They had a bit of a tiff once inside, but we’re not sure how long they had been loose together. Since then, Roger’s wounds have healed, and he’s had the chance to decompress. Now, his true personality is shining through, and he’s ready for a fresh start!
Roger is always excited for walks, following his nose and taking in the world around him. In the play yard, he’s surprisingly spry for his age, happily galloping around like a much younger dog. But after his playful moments, he always returns to your side, looking for some love and affection. Roger loves leaning against your legs for a hug and has been great about wearing a harness. When we first introduced him to playgroups, he was a bit nervous and unsure at first. He has been respectful and well-mannered with other calm dogs, but seems nervous around dogs who want to play too physically.
Roger is now ready to find a loving family who appreciates his gentle, senior personality and is ready to offer him the comfort and care he deserves in his golden years. If you’re looking for a sweet, loyal companion who will shower you with affection, Roger might just be your perfect match!

Furry Friday: Meet Ray J!
Ray J already neutered and READY TO GO HOME!!! This guy is a handsome 7-year-old dog who’s ready to be your loyal companion! Ray J came in as a stray, so we don’t know much about his past, but he’s a mellow guy with a calm, friendly demeanor. He’s easy to leash, doesn’t react to the barking dogs on his way outside, and loves to walk and explore by your side. While he may pull a little on the leash, he’s low-energy and easygoing, making him a great walking partner.
Volunteers say that he is a delight! Ray J knows how to sit and takes treats gently, showing his polite side. During doggie playgroups, it was determined that he needs to be the only dog in the house. Come meet Ray J, see his charming smile, and start your adventures together!
Ray J has surprised our volunteers with his squirrel-like tendencies to save some treats for later. He will occasionally carry a treat in his mouth until he finds the perfect place to cache it (https://youtube.com/shorts/wC71iKJaJFA?feature=share). If you’re a fan of buried treasure, Ray J may be the pup for you!

If you’re interested in learning more about him, please reach out to our volunteer matchmakers at [email protected] with the subject line “Ray J 254583”.
He is up to date on vaccinations, flea/tick, and heartworm prevention, is microchipped, and already neutered. If you have cats, we recommend slow introductions over time. If you have children in your home, we recommend supervision between animals and children at all times.

Furry Friday: Meet Desmond!
Desmond is a 4-year-old male dog with a calm, friendly personality and a love for the outdoors. Though he gets excited to head outside, he settles quickly and is easy to leash. He has no problem walking past other dogs and enjoys sniffing and exploring his surroundings. Out on walks, Desmond is happy and social, often wanting to greet other dogs he encounters. Not particularly food-motivated, he does accept treats once he’s back in his kennel. Desmond is currently on Omega fish oil to support his skin health (not contagious) as he needs a bit of extra nourishment. He’s a fantastic walker, making him an ideal choice for anyone who enjoys daily walks and would like a loyal companion by their side.
During doggie playgroups, Desmond was a riot! From the first minute in the yard, he let it be known that he was there to ROCK OUT! He ran, chased, wrestled, and seemed to love interacting with the other dogs. He played with females and males, and he seemed to believe that he was King for the Day! He had an absolute blast.
Although he is heartworm positive, it is treatable and not contagious. Friends of Wake County Animal Center has provided a $600 sponsorship to help cover the cost of treatment.

If you’re interested in learning more about Desmond, please reach out to our Volunteer Matchmakers at [email protected] with the subject line “Desmond 254533.”

Furry Friday: Meet Chucky!
Meet Chucky 254527, a 1-year-old male pup with 44 lbs. of pure fun and energy! This adorable stray is full of personality, and just wait until you see his ears-they both lean to one side, giving him the cutest, windswept look.
During playgroups, this kiddo came in 100mph. He doesn’t have many manners and was jumping all over another dog. While he doesn’t mean any harm, his playstyle might not be every dog’s cup of tea.
Chucky gets super excited when it’s time to go outside, jumping around and eager to be leashed. Chucky is on the potty-trained list, keeping his kennel clean, and he knows “sit” and takes treats gently, which makes training a breeze. Fun-loving, playful, and curious, this sweet guy would be a perfect match for an active family or person who can help him channel all that puppy energy.

Although he is heartworm positive, it is treatable and not contagious. Friends of Wake County Animal Center has provided a $400 sponsorship to help cover the cost of treatment.
If you’re interested in learning more about Chucky, please reach out to our Volunteer Matchmakers at [email protected] with the subject line “Chucky 254527.”
