A tropical storm warning was in effect Monday for parts of the extreme northwestern Bahamas, including Great Abaco, Grand Bahama Island and the surrounding keys Heavy rains also were forecast along the coastline of North and South Carolina. How Electronic Arts’ $55 billion go-private deal could impact the video game industry

How Electronic Arts’ $55 billion go-private deal could impact the video game industry

NEW YORK (AP) — In what could become the largest-ever buyout funded by private equity, video game maker Electronic Arts has agreed to be acquired in a deal valued at $55 billion. And beyond the potentially record-breaking price tag, the deal could bring wider shifts in the gaming world. Electronic Arts owns popular titles like Madden NFL, Battlefield and The Sims — and going private could grant the company more freedom in developing and distributing these games. It also marks the latest move from Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund PIF to invest in gaming. If the transaction gets the greenlight, PIF would join Silver Lake Partners and Affinity Partners, which run by U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, as Electronic Arts’ new owners.… Continue Reading

US House members hear pleas for tougher justice policies after stabbing death of refugee

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — U.S. House members have met in North Carolina’s largest city to hear from families of violent-crime victims. They called on Monday for tougher criminal justice policies after last month’s stabbing death of a Ukrainian refugee on a Charlotte train. The judiciary subcommittee meeting in Charlotte heard from speakers who criticized local court systems for failing to protect the public. The meeting was prompted by the death of Iryna Zarutska and the arrest of a suspect with a long criminal history. Public outrage intensified after the release of security video showing the attack.… Continue Reading

Electronic Arts, the video game maker of “Madden NFL,” “The Sims,” and other popular titles, is being acquired and taken private for about $55 billion in what could become the largest-ever buyout funded by private-equity firms. The private equity firm Silver Lake Partners, Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund PIF, and Affinity Partners will pay EA’s stockholders $210 per share. Affinity Partners is run by President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Rumors of a deal sent EA’s stock soaring Friday, and shares rose another 5% Monday.… Continue Reading

Europe retains the Ryder Cup and reasserts dominance over Americans

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Europe is keeping the Ryder Cup, just like everyone expected. It didn’t happen without a few nervous moments. The Americans rallied from a seven-point deficit to have a flicker of hope. Europe needed only two points to retain the cup. Ludvig Aberg in the fifth match got the first one. Matt Fitzpatrick earned a halve that felt like a consolation because he had Bryson DeChambeau down by 5 holes at one point. And then Shane Lowry delivered the magic and added his name to Irish lore. His birdied on the 18th hole gave Europe a half to reach 14 points.… Continue Reading
