Australian pop artist Ruel has won first place at the 2025 Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition, earning the A$50,000 top prize for his song The Suburbs. The result was confirmed through an official announcement from the competition’s organizers.
The annual songwriting contest received more than 4,000 submissions from writers in 52 countries. Songs were evaluated through a blind judging process, with more than 70 music industry professionals listening anonymously. Organizers say the approach is designed to keep the focus on songwriting quality rather than artist profile or commercial success.
Alongside Ruel’s win, the competition also recognized emerging talent. Ninajirachi earned second place, while Louis Schoorl received third place honors. Additional awards were presented across multiple categories, highlighting new voices from around the world.
Beyond the awards, the competition continues its charitable mission. Entry fees support Noro Music Therapy, an Australian organization that provides free music therapy to children with disabilities and serious illnesses.
