Dolly Parton, whose songs, personality, and unmistakable voice made her one of country music’s most enduring stars, has died at 80.
Her family confirmed her death in an announcement shared by her nephew, Bryan Seaver. No cause of death was disclosed. The news marks the loss of an artist whose career stretched across music, movies, television, business and philanthropy.
Born in Tennessee in 1946, Parton rose from modest beginnings to international fame. Her catalog includes Jolene, Coat of Many Colors, 9 to 5 and I Will Always Love You, a song later made famous to another generation by Whitney Houston.
Parton also built a successful acting career and became closely associated with Dollywood, her Tennessee theme park. Her achievements earned her induction into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Away from entertainment, Parton supported numerous charitable efforts. Her Imagination Library has provided free books to children for decades, while her other contributions included disaster relief and a $1 million donation supporting COVID-19 vaccine research.
